FILM buffs are in for a treat when 11 Australian and international films are screened in the picturesque surrounds of Mission Beach.

Castaways Resort & Spa and Drift Spa will provide the idyllic beachfront location for the main screening events of the inaugural Mission Beach Film Festival this weekend.

Castaways will host the Under the Stars screenings with an opening night fiesta featuring award-winning film The Age of Stupid.

Guests will enjoy bubbly on arrival and a selection of tantalising treats featuring 100 per cent local produce and a special live acoustic performance by one of Australia’s freshest talents, Ryan Meeking.

Castaways Resort & Spa owner James Neville Smith said: "We are delighted to be a sponsor of the Mission Beach Film Festival and of Ryan Meeking’s visit to Mission Beach.

"We are great supporters of all activities and events which highlight the many attributes that Mission Beach has to offer.

"We believe that Mission Beach has a great future and the further development of events and festivals benefit not only the tourism community but the wider community in terms of economic growth for the town."

Festival producer Dee Cameron said Castaways provided a wonderful location to enjoy the festival.

"The area we have been allocated by Castaways Resort & Spa provides the perfect tropical open air cinematic experience," she said.

"The beachfront and function centre will be our venues, wet weather contingency is easily accommodated and the co-operation of staff, management and owner has allowed us to elevate the delivery of this unique event."

Castaways Resort & Spa and Drift Spa will host the opening night screening on Friday and daytime screenings of two children’s films, Hoot and Wall-E.

On Saturday, the beachfront resort will screen the family film The Fox and the Child, followed by the internationally renowned feature documentary Big River Man.

Festival curator, Sue Clothier said: "The inspiration behind the creation of the Mission Beach Film Festival is to tell stories about environmental sustainability.

"The criteria for each film selected is that it must be entertaining.

"The festival program has been designed for people of all ages and it is my sincere wish that you would discover a film that inspires you."

Castaways is offering Opening Fiesta Film Festival Packages for $220 per night including two Opening Fiesta tickets, two nights’ accommodation in an ocean view resort room with a free bottle of wine, breakfast and a 20 per cent discount at Drift Spa.
