NORTH Cairns will spend a chunk of this week's training session practising goal kicking after an inaccurate display in front of the sticks in their AFL Cairns Women's League match against the Manunda Hawks at Watson Oval.

While the Tigers were comfortable 5.9 (39) to 1.2 (8) winners in greasy conditions on Saturday, coach Jo Butland said her team had to make better use of its chances.

"We got the ball to the forward line, which was good, but to kick nine behinds was disappointing," she said.

"That’s something we’re going to have to improve on.

"But for a first game I thought we played pretty well overall."

Butland said the Tigers were not at full strength for the clash and expected her team to improve as the season progressed.

"We had a couple of girls missing who would have made a difference yesterday I think," she said. "But like I said, overall I was happy. We did all the things we spoke about at training."

In the day’s other match at Watson’s Oval, Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs Babes extracted some revenge for last season’s grand final loss by beating reigning premiers South Cairns 5.3 (33) to 3.3 (21).

It was the Babes’ first win of the season after losing last week’s opening match to the Hawks.

Results: North Cairns 5.9 (39) d Manunda Hawks 1.2 (8).

Goals: (Norths) Sharume Creed, Sarina George, Ruby Leete; (Hawks) Cassie Mae Butler.

Best: (Norths) Inyika Buthmann, Ruby Leete, Belinda Bay; (Hawks) Tina Hilditch, Rose Jorquera, Monica Duggin, Jen Robbinson.

Centrals 5.3 (33) d South Cairns 3.3 (21).

Goals: (Centrals) Narelle Emery 2, Josephine Dennis 1, Kara Stapleton 1, Crystal Shaw 1; (Souths) Laura Martin, Asta Naden, Ashleigh Singleton.

Best: (Centrals) Rachel White. Belinda Hamilton, Jo Dennis; (Souths) Jane Elzinga, Asta Naden, Kristen Fixter.

Breaking free: Manunda Hawks’ Rose Jorquera enjoys possession of the Sherrin as she sprints clear against North Cairns Tigers in a best-for-team performance.
