Premier flies to Cairns after Jetstar deal
PREMIER Anna Bligh is in Cairns to detail a "shot in the arm" for the Far Northern region today.
Ms Bligh is expected to announce more details about a Jetstar deal to provide an extra 300,000 seats for Cairns over the next two and a half years.
The deal, revealed by The Cairns Post on Wednesday, replaces 14 Qantas flights from Japan to Cairns that were cancelled last year.
Jetstar flights deal to boost economy
This morning, Ms Bligh said on her Twitter site that she was to officially announce the new Jetstar international flights into Cairns.
She described the deal as a "much needed shot in arm for this fantastic city".
"They've been doing it tough," she wrote.
Speaking to The Cairns Post earlier this week, she said the additional international flights were expected to inject more than $220 million into the local economy in direct tourism spending and would help create up to 2000 new jobs.
Ms Bligh is expected to meet with Cairns Regional Council representatives this morning.
