A BEER and a bucket of prawns while watching the sun setting over the water: that's the wonderful reward waiting at Karumba Point after the drive from Cairns.

Karumba is the only stretch of beach in the Gulf Savannah that can be accessed by a sealed road.

Karumba, the meeting place of the sea and the Norman River, is a fishing mecca. Fish from the beach, or take your own boat or a fishing charter. Catches on offer include barramundi, blue and king salmon, jewfish, grunter and mackerel.

Even if fishing’s not your thing, Karumba Point makes a picturesque spot for a relaxing getaway by the beach, with a range of accommodation options from holiday units to caravan and camping.

It’s famous for spectacular sunsets over the beach. And surrounded by wetlands and ocean, Karumba is a bird watcher’s delight. Pelicans, cyrus cranes, brolgas and black swans are among the array of birdlife.

You can drive direct to Karumba from Cairns in a day, but allow a day or two extra if you can, to enjoy a sightseeing stops along the way.

From towns, villages and lakes region of the Atherton Tableland through to the Gulf towns of Mt Surprise, Normanton, Croydon and Georgetown, there’s a huge itinerary of places to explore, to enjoy a picnic, pub meal or overnight stop.

The road to Karumba from Cairns is sealed all the way so in the dry season (April to November) it’s easily accessible by two-wheel drive.
