Riders pedal message to share the road

A GIRL who kept a bedside vigil for her Cairns triathlete mother for the past six weeks joined in a "heartfelt" ride with more than 150 cyclists yesterday.

Pedal power was on the agenda for Zoe Frecklington when she took to the road to raise awareness for cyclists and motorists to share the road.

Her mother Keri Frecklington was left with broken legs, broken arms and a fracture in her lower back after a crash involving a car on October 10.

Crash shatters triathlete's dream

Cairns Crocs, Cairns Road Runners and Triathlon Club and Cardiac Cyclists raised $5500 for Ms Frecklington's road to recovery.

Cairns Croc triathlon club's Ivan Whittle said it was a fantastic effort for an early Sunday morning ride.

"The money will go into a trust account that will help with Keri's medical bills and anything else she needs to get back on her feet again," Mr Whittle said.

"Even on the day it happened, Zoe's been a brave little girl. She's been by her mum's side.

"We visited Keri after the ride (yesterday) and she was just overwhelmed at how many people came along for the ride and also the breakfast afterwards.

"She was just blown away."

Mr Whittle said respect between cyclists and motorists was a two-way street.

"If we are out there keep an eye out for us but you do get those bike riders who get out there like kids riding on the wrong side of the road or tourists not wearing their helmets," he said.

"It still comes down to awareness."

Ms Frecklington's incident was the latest in a number of serious accidents involving cyclists in Cairns.

In July, marine lawyer Brian White received cracked ribs, broken collarbone, punctured lungs, fractured skull and dislocated jaw after a tourist failed to stop at an intersection in the CBD.

In January, Cairns doctor Hossam El-Shazly, 38, was killed while riding his bicycle to work at the Trinity Beach roundabout on the Captain Cook Highway.
