JOE Hockey appears to have overwhelming support in the Far North ahead of today's Federal Opposition leadership contest.

A Liberal Party meeting this morning is expected to choose between three leadership candidates, Malcolm Turnbull, Joe Hockey and Tony Abbott.

In a cairns.com.au poll run since Friday, 92 per cent of the 300-plus respondents said Joe Hockey was the best person to lead the Federal Opposition.

Today's party room meeting that will be the culmination of the most tumultuous week in Liberal politics in recent memory.

Mr Turnbull saw off a move to unseat him last week but he isn't expected to be so successful this morning, when the party meets for another spill motion.
