This weekend sees a tribute to one of the world's best loved reggae performers
The world of reggae lost one of its brightest stars in 2007, when South Africa performer, pioneer and best-selling artist Lucky Dube was murdered in his hometown of Johannesburg.
Hailed as a hero in his home country, Dube’s legendary status was swiftly approaching that of his predecessor, Bob Marley.
His strong message touched millions of hearts around the world through his 21 studio albums and countless live shows, supporting the likes of international superstars such as Maxi Priest, Sinead O’Connor, Peter Gabriel, Michael Jackson, Seal, Ziggy Marley, Celine Dion, Sting and many more. As one can judge by listening to his music, Dube had a message on every album and was one of the most dynamic reggae artists in the world.
Riding along with Lucky on his rise to fame was the Lucky Dube band One People and Thuthukani Cele.
The band consisted of some of the most evocative musicians to emerge from South Africa, making some of the most enjoyable and memorable music of the 21st century.
Thuthukani and the Lucky Dube One People Band, along with former Bob Marley stage manager/Wailers band business manager Mark Miller and Lucky’s manager David Jacobs present their own tribute to Lucky Dube this weekend, with a blistering performance of original Lucky Dube tracks, plus new music the band are recording in Johannesburg.
This fantastic tribute will have you on your feet grooving to the sounds of one of the world’s finest reggae acts.
>> The Lucky Dube Celebration Tour is at Brothers World Of Entertainment on Friday night, from 8pm, supported by Zennith. Tickets are $32 presale, available online now from the Brothers website www.brotherscairns.com.au, or $37 on the door (get in quick, will sell out).
