A NAVY officer who broke his neck after falling down a mineshaft and a Sudanese refugee who saw his parents shot in front of him were among the "living books" who told their stories in Cairns yesterday.

International Human Rights Day celebrations at the Tanks Arts Centre saw an "encyclopedia" of Far Northerners tell their tales of overcoming adversity and fighting for their rights.

About 600 people attended the Living Books, Local People, Remarkable Lives event, hosted by the Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland.

Another of the living books was transexual Robyn Stott, who started dressing in woman’s clothes as a
10-year-old but only freed her "true self" from a secret life two years ago.

The event aims to give people an insight into the worlds of those whose life circumstances have seen them battling for understanding, and the importance of human rights for all people.

This year was the third time the event had been held in Cairns.
