Cattana wetlands now a place of beauty
Haven: The Cattana Wetlands near Yorkeys Knob have been restored to their former beauty as a Q150 project.
ONCE a degraded sand mine, the 80ha Cattana Wetlands have been restored to their former glory and yesterday were reopened as an environmental haven.
The $3 million Cattana Wetlands restoration project – jointly funded by Cairns Regional Council and the State Government – involved the planting of 10,000 trees, the rehabilitation of rainforest and the removal of invasive weeds.
Boardwalks, paths, a viewing platform and picnic areas were also installed during the project, one of more than 90 initiated as part of celebrations for Queensland’s 150th anniversary of independence from New South Wales.
"This has got to be one of the best Q150 Legacy Infrastructure projects," Barron River MP Steve Wettenhall said.
The wetlands can be reached via Dunne Rd, Smithfield.
