Elandra at Mission Beach, two hours south of Cairns, is definitely one-of-a-kind.
While the launch of the newly named resort at the end of June made headlines across the country thanks to its guest of honour, African queen Grace Jones, visitors to the resort are immediately enchanted by its unusual classic beauty and outstanding location.
An exotic African theme is evident the minute you enter the luxurious resort. While a gleaming white entranceway greets you, African décor and artefacts dominate. But the piece de resistance, which you see as soon as you enter, is the spectacular pool.
Surrounded by designer lounges, Moroccan-style day beds and swaying palm trees, the impressive pool also has expansive sea views. You can relax in a comfy lounge, enjoy a cocktail in a day bed and breathe in the fresh sea breezes while gazing over Dunk Island.
The beach is close enough to hear the waves lapping upon shore, but because the resort is elevated, you are able to enjoy exceptional vistas to Dunk Island and beyond.
Like most visitors, we rarely left the pool area, which is adjacent to the restaurant so we were able to order nibbles and drinks while sitting back in our lounges. When we did pull ourselves away from the pool, we discovered there is so much more to Elandra, which has 55 rooms.
The restaurant serves exceptional food morning, noon and night and a cool, relaxed cocktail bar is perfect for chilling out. There also is a boutique, library, tennis court and plenty of nature trails.
A walk to the beach, through wooden pathways in the rainforest, is a must. At the end of the walk you’re rewarded with a private spot on magnificent Mission Beach.
