Wet New Year's expected in Cairns
FAR Northern residents will farewell 2009 with their umbrellas up with the weather bureau predicting showers will hang around until Friday.
Duty forecaster Alicia Duncanson said the system bringing rain to the Far North would ease tomorrow, only to be replaced by another system on Wednesday.

"The wet weather will be hanging around for the majority of this week," she said.
"The new high will ridge up the coast on Wednesday and bring more showers.
"But that will come from the southeast, rather than the west, and will only be showers, not torrential rain."

Ms Duncanson said there was a chance of a storm on the Tableland this afternoon but said storms were unlikely for the rest of the week.
"Storms usually come from the west and with the new system from the southeast, it is less likely to bring storms," she said.
It has already been a wet couple of days for residents on the Tableland with Malanda receiving 55mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday.
Mt Garnet received 44mm in the same 24 hour period, while 39mm fell at Ravenshoe and 10mm fell at Mareeba.
Port Douglas received 24mm while 5mm fell in Cairns.
