Four cyclones expected to form

QUEENSLAND faces up to four cyclones in a later-than-usual season.

Residents in "cyclone country" have been warned to be on alert until April.

This comes despite predictions of a below average number of tropical cyclones in the Coral Sea, typically between three and four every season.

"There is little to no chance of a cyclone over the Christmas break," weather bureau regional director Jim Davidson said yesterday.

"We are in a definite El Nino weather pattern – it has been a late start to not only the cyclone season but also the wet season."

He said it was likely three to four cyclones would form off the coast between now and April.
