Police hunt fools who fired flares
THE water police have been called in to help solve last week's attacks on homes at Bayview Heights using marine flares.
Authorities yesterday confirmed the flares used in the attacks, which melted roofs and burnt backyard property, were marine rockets used by boaties but not readily available to the public.
The mysterious acts of vandalism took place about 11.30pm on Christmas Eve.
Several Bayview Heights properties were under threat with two of the flares falling on houses and causing thousands of dollars damage.
Cairns Police District Supt Brent Carter said talks with water authorities might unlock clues into where the flares were bought.
He also said no suspects had been identified since the homes on Toogood Rd and Peridot St had been scorched in the attack.
"We’re talking to water police about it tomorrow … they might be able to shed some information on it," he said.
"We want to catch these morons who are hellbent on entertaining themselves at the expense of people’s property … it could have potentially burnt a house down."
Affected home owner Bindi Nelson, who works as a hydrographics surveyor for the Royal Australian Navy, suspects the flare is a marine rocket.
