THE Bureau of Meteorology says it is unlikely a tropical low in the Gulf of Carpentaria will become Queensland's first cyclone of the season at this stage.

At 4am (AEST) today the tropical low pressure system was located 300km northwest of Weipa and was moving southeast at 16km per hour.

A cyclone watch is being maintained from Pormpuraaw on western Cape York to Thursday Island.

"There’s a fairly low possibility it’s going to form into a tropical cyclone, it appears now," said forecaster David Grant.

"We are maintaining a watch and continue to monitor satellite imagery just to make sure."

Mr Grant said gales are expected to develop around the northern part of the system and it could bring heavy rain around the Weipa region as it crosses the coast overnight tonight.

There is small chance the system could develop into a cyclone after it enters the Coral Sea, but the bureau expects it will continue to track eastwards as a tropical low.
