THE Cairns Hockey Association women's under-19 academy squad will get a taste of international competition when it contests this month's Singapore Sevens tournament.

The Cairns outfit is likely to come up against national German, Netherlands, Indian and Pakistani teams at the tournament which is regularly used by European countries to enhance their preparations during the northern
winter.

Cairns regional development coach David McNeil said the Singapore Sevens would be an eye-opener for a large number of the squad members.

"It will give them valuable experience of being on an overseas trip and playing in international competition," he said.

"That’s why we decided to send our talented young players over there, so they can get experience against senior national players."

McNeil said the squad had trained hard during the off-season in preparation for the tour, enhancing their skills and fitness in order to match it with international standard players.

The Singapore Sevens tournament is being staged on February 20-21.

Cairns Academy squad: Kiona Jones, Katie Russo, Carmon McPhee, Chrissee Benn, Rachel Scarabello, Kristy Leitner, Leigh Thomas, Jedess Hudson.

Singapore-bound: Chrissee Benn will be among the Cairns youngsters taking their hockey game to the Singapore Sevens.
