Art imitates life
For an insight into the world of an alternative creator's mind, Staples is a must-see
This weekend, Issues, Auxiliary and MOFO present Staples, a wicked collection of zines from both local and interstate artists complemented by some fine local music.
Zines are small, independent and often self-produced street magazines with a strong artistic and social focus.
They document life through an alternative viewpoint to mainstream media and occupy a space somewhere between art, design and modern social comment.
They offer a unique view of their creators’ minds and view of the world and represent a blossoming underground artistic culture.
Publications on display at Staples include Auxiliary, Issues, Fez, and much more.
To complement the zines, there is a top selection of local music in the shape of bands such as Bewarewolf, Sorority Fever, Panzram and Meat Bikini, with DJ Paul Rudd spinning some tunes on the decks, too.
Don’t miss this fantastic night of music, art and design at one of Cairns’ most cutting-edge and innovative art spaces, Merchants Of Fine Objects.
>> Staples is at Merchants Of Fine Objects, aka MOFO, 70 McLeod St, on Saturday night from 6.30pm. Entry is $5, including two free zines.
