Bike thief takes on two cyclists

Friday, February 12, 2010

A HALF-naked thief pulled a cyclist off his bike to bash him before pinching another man's bike in a brazen robbery in Cairns overnight.

Two men, aged 26 and 29, were riding their bicycles along Mulgrave Rd at 12.30am.

The culprit ran up and grabbed one of the men's backpacks and pulled him backwards, making him fall off his bike near Jones St, Parramatta Park.

The man then hit the victim in the face and tried to steal his bike.

The second victim screamed at the offender to leave them alone, but the thief fled with his bike instead.

The assailant pedalled away from the scene, as the second victim gave chase along Mulgrave Rd and into Aumuller St.

The offender is described as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance, aged in his early 20s, about 172cm tall, with a thin muscular build, a dark complexion, and short dark cropped hair.

He was wearing a pair of dark coloured shorts and was shirtless.

The first victim sought medical treatment for a facial injury. The second victim was not injured.

Police located the stolen bicycle abandoned nearby.

Anyone with information should call Cairns police on 4030 7000 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
