THE Willie Mason show was postponed but rugby league fans still lapped up the chance to meet their National Rugby League heroes in Cairns yesterday.

The North Queensland Cowboys arrived in the city yesterday ahead of their NRL trial against the New Zealand Warriors at Barlow Park tomorrow night.

Captain Johnathan Thurston, coach Neil Henry and other Cowboys met supporters at Pacific Toyota.

Henry said it was great to come to Cairns.

"We come here every year, have done for several years now, and there's always great support up here at Barlow Park," he said.

"It certainly helps out the local league as well."

About 40 Cowboys and Warriors players will blitz schools throughout Cairns today, while Thurston and the Warriors' Queensland and Australian star Steve Price will head to Cairns Base Hospital.

Controversial recruit Mason did not fly to Cairns with the main squad yesterday and is expected to travel by bus with his Cowboys combined teammates tomorrow.

Mason will play in a Cowboys combined side against the Northern Pride in the curtain-raiser match tomorrow and is also likely to feature in the main match.

Fans can watch the Cowboys train at Barlow Park from 8am today.

See The Cairns Post today for the official match program.
