MINING company Cape Alumina is opening an office at western Cape York, months after Terri Irwin applied to have the Steve Irwin Reserve made a nature refuge under the Nature Conservation Act.
The battle for land rights is escalating on the Cape as the State Government waits for an environmental impact statement from Cape Alumina, the company that wants to mine bauxite on a tract of Cape York land taking in 3000ha of the 135,000ha Steve Irwin Reserve, also known as Bertiehaugh Station.
The company’s managing director Paul Messenger said an office would be opened at Mapoon in the shire council’s Land and Sea Centre, and a local person would be hired as a community liaison officer.
An environmental impact statement is expected to be completed in the first half of this year.
