Rip-off merchant to repay $10,000
AN accused dodgy trader who allegedly ripped off 800 Far Northern residents has handed himself into authorities.
He’s offered to pay the $10,000 debts racked up by his victims, who are mostly on welfare payments, after tricking them into costly rental contracts.
The man signed people up into rental agreements on household and electrical items such as fridges, washing machines, home entertainment systems and cameras.
The Office of Fair Trading says the door-to-door trader targeted indigenous communities in Cairns, Mossman, Yarrabah, Cooktown, Mareeba and Wujal Wujal.
