THEY have dived the whole world over but this scuba-loving couple says the Great Barrier Reef near Cairns is the best experience they have had.

Laurence and Debbie Templeton spent four days diving Osprey Reef and its surrounds on the Spirit of Freedom as part of a $10,000 prize.

On their return to Cairns, they said the Great Barrier Reef still deserved to be considered one of the world’s seven natural wonders.

“The coral was absolutely beautiful, the most beautiful I’ve ever seen and the variety, I haven’t seen that much variety,” Mr Templeton said.

“The Reef life is still superb and while there is some damage it is not as bad as elsewhere.”

The British couple, from Guildford in Surrey, have dived around the world, including Central America, Turkey, Kenya,  Zanzibar, the Red Sea and the Caribbean but they rate the Great Barrier Reef as the best.

The Templetons' prize included two return flights from London to Cairns and four nights accommodation on the Spirit of Freedom as well as three nights in Cairns.

More than 2000 people entered the competition, which was highlighted in a co-operative industry brochure printed and distributed throughout Britain.
