THE big wet has returned. Port Douglas and Mossman residents copped a drenching this week, with forecasters saying the region had received its biggest falls since early last year.

Duty forecaster Stephen Fletcher said Port Douglas had received 277mm of rain in a 48-hour period until 9am yesterday. Mossman was not far behind with 258mm.

Cairns recorded only 79mm of rain in the same period.

"It’s been very interesting because the things that have caused this weather have been relatively subtle," duty forecaster Stephen Fletcher said.

"We’ve had a ridge extend along the coast with east to northeasterly winds and it just happens that Port Douglas has copped all the rain this time."

The Gulf has also received a drenching due to a monsoon trough, and a low, which has about a 10 per cent chance of developing into a cyclone in the next 24 to 48 hours.

The low pressure system has caused 103mm of rain in 48 hours to be dumped on Mornington Island and between 30-50mm on mainland communities. Cooktown and Cape Flattery also received 144mm and 177mm of rain respectively.

Port Douglas officer in charge Sergeant Damien Meadows said one lane was blocked for 45 minutes as the car was towed.

The Mossman-Mt Molloy Rd at the Bushy Creek crossing near Julatten was also closed yesterday morning as flood waters engulfed the highway.

Daintree Village residents lost power on Monday due to flooding, with wet conditions causing delays for Ergon workers fixing the problem.

Meanwhile, a 14-year-old girl was transported to Cairns Base Hospital after a two-car collision at the intersection of Airport Ave and Sheridan St yesterday morning.
