FIVE people have been rescued after running out of fuel while on a fishing trip in the Torres Strait.

Two friends from Papua New Guinea, a Saibai Island man and his two boys, aged seven and eight, headed for a trip to Beka Reef.

The crew set off at 10am yesterday but family raised the alarm at 7pm last night when they failed to return.

Emergency crews searched for more than five hours for the missing fishing party.

They were then found shortly after midnight.

Cairns District Crime Prevention Office Acting Sgt Russell Parker said the crew had run out of fuel but all on board were reportedly in good health.
