Snake slips in for morning coffee

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

© The Cairns Post

EARLY morning coffee lovers had to abandon their caffeine hit when a snake slithered past a Cairns cafe.

The venomous red-bellied black snake was caught on the footpath outside Beethoven’s Cafe in the CBD while couples enjoyed morning coffees.

The 1.4m snake hitched a ride with a staff member from Gordonvale and slipped out of the car door on to the footpath near the cafe’s entrance about 8.30am on Monday.

Snake handlers had to flush the snake out of a drain.

Cairns Snake Removals owner David Walton said there was a lot of interest from cafe clients, who got more than their morning coffee and paper.

"There was plenty of people there," he said.

"When I pulled the snake out of the gutter, there were about two or three couples at the cafe who were watching with a lot of interest."
