Boom times in Cairns fitness industry
THE fitness industry is booming in the Far North as people become more concerned about their weight, diet and fitness.
The growth includes more niche personal trainers, specialised fitness programs and the opening of new fitness clubs and branches of existing gyms.
Industry leaders say government policies urging people to improve their health and fitness, better education and media attention had sparked interest.
Developments include:
* The opening of a 24 hour/seven days a week centre at Westcourt.
* Genesis to open new premises at Edmonton and Redlynch.
* The reopening of the only gym at Mossman.
* Active taking over a gym at Edmonton.
* The Club One Fitness rebranding at Parramatta Park.
* New school-based gyms at Parramatta Park and Redlynch.
Andrew McCallum, of industry group Fitness Australia, said the fitness industry continued to experience a lot of growth, particularly in Cairns.
"The vibrant expanding range of services in Cairns shows the influx of people wanting to live a fitter, healthier lifestyle," he said.
Alissa O’Flaherty, of ProBalance 24-hour Fitness, said she saw a need for a gym which was open all hours to suit shift workers.
"We also get women who are a bit self-conscious coming here late at night with their husbands," she said.
Destination Fitness owner Jesse Zell said people were turning to gyms and fitness because they were becoming more aware of looking after themselves.
"A lot is to do with particular government policies, advising us to watch our waistlines, as well as programs like The Biggest Loser," Mr Zell said.
I Do Fitness owner Brendan Ives has reopened the only gym at Mossman due to demand.
David De Rose operates school-based REPS Fitness Clubs at Cairns State High School and St Andrew’s Catholic College at Redlynch as well as offering personal training and group fitness.
