Strong wind warning closes Cairns beaches
ELEVEN Far Northern beaches have been closed to swimmers because of a strong wind warning.
Ellis Beach, Palm Cove, Clifton Beach, Trinity Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Holloways Beach, Port Douglas, Bramston Beach, Etty Bay, North Mission Beach and South Mission Beach are all closed to swimmers.
Kewarra Beach, Green Island and Kurrimine Beach remain open.
Several of the closed beaches had stinger nets removed late yesterday, while the remainder were pulled in this morning because of the blustery conditions.
A strong wind warning is current in the Far North, with winds at 15-20 knots increasing to 30 knots this afternoon
Seas outside the Reef are expected to reach 3m this afternoon while the swell inside the Reef are expected to reach 1.5m.
Similar conditions have been forecast for the Far North tomorrow, while winds are expected to hit 35 knots on Saturday.
Surf Life Saving Queensland NQ services co-ordinator Ebeny Keating said conditions would be re-assessed tomorrow morning but she said if the forecasts proved correct, it was unlikely the beaches would reopen before Monday.
