Wicked ute
Cop bait: The F6 ute packs a punch like a rocketship.
The F6 ute is an outstanding car that could make "green" tinged people cringe.
Ford balances out this high-end performer with cars like the ultra clean Fiesta Econetic but we know which car we’d prefer to drive – the F6 ute.
An absolute rocketship, it gets off the mark like a V8 Supercar. It has among the strongest mid-range punch we have experienced and spins out hard to the red line.
Our six-speed auto test car puts away a 0-100kmh sprint in the four second bracket. The six speed manual would be the same, but as auto is a no cost option, we’d probably opt for it.
The F6 sounds like a vacuum cleaner – hum, swoosh and that’s it. Pity, it could do with a raunchy note to match the performance and looks.
On the road the six-speed auto bangs gears through really quickly, kicks down instantly, and manages to keep some control over the huge torque output – 565Nm at 1900rpm.
There’s no change paddles but a sequential change on the shift stick.
A straight six, the 4.0-litre engine kicks out 310kW thanks to largish Garrett turbo breathing through an air to air intercooler.
It has the right dynamic components for high performance – big Brembo brakes (test car had optional six piston calipers), 19in alloys in graphite colour with ultra low profile Dunlop tyres, sports suspension and a limited slip diff’.
The F6 runs best on 98 octane fuel which it consumes at an average combined rate of 13.0-litres/100km.
External looks are enhanced by dual exhaust outlet, body aero add ons, low ride height and an attractive tonneau cover emblazoned with the FPV logo. We love the panda eye front and the visible intercooler under the grille.
On the safety side there’s plenty of kit, with four air bags and sports stability control.
Inside is well equipped with an impressive audio, Bluetooth phone connection, leather sports seats, large colour info screen, aircon, alloy pedals and blue lit instruments including boost gauge. The push button start is a pain – it only works after you insert and turn key, so why bother?
A full size alloy spare scores a big tick.
Verdict: Wicked car, looks unreal, goes like it looks, cop bait. Price is $58,990.
