The main towns include Aurukun, Bamaga, Cairns (part), Cooktown, Hope Vale, Kowanyama, Kuranda, Lockhart River, Mossman, Pormpuraaw, Port Douglas, Thursday Island and Weipa.
The port city of Cairns is the main commercial and administrative centre of Leichhardt.
The electorate is named after Friedrich Leichhardt (1813-48), an explorer and scientist.
The current sitting member for Leichhardt is Jim Turnour (ALP, 2007-present).
