Our Say: Coral Sea compromise is necessary

Thursday, July 15, 2010

LIFE is full of compromises but it seems the Federal Government and greenies don't know what the word means.

We make compromises every day in all aspects of our lives. It’s the only way to be fair and equitable.

Far Northern anglers told to join dole line

But when it comes to areas such as the Coral Sea it appears the Government and the environmentalists want them locked up from fishermen, charter boat operators, ships and just about everyone for good.

We all acknowledge the beauty of the marine environment and the need to protect it at all costs.

After all, the sea includes one of the natural wonders of the world and is the prime motivation for people to visit this unique part of Australia.

Everyone is doing their bit to ensure our waters remain clean and green.

Farmers are limiting sediment and chemical run-off, fishermen are not raping and pillaging the fish resource, tour operators know where they can anchor their vessels without damaging corals and most ship owners try to avoid running aground and polluting the pristine environment.

Now, a new Government commissioned report, not only wants to ban commercial fishers from more areas, but limit compensation claims.

The industry is worth more than $200 million and employs 1000 people in the Far North. The region does not need another 1000 people added to the biggest dole queue in the country.

This is a time for suitable compromises to be made by all involved and that includes the Government, conservationists, fishermen and others.
