Commercial liftoff: Cairns airport plans huge expansion
THE operators of Cairns airport are opening up the extensive Aeroglen property to widespread business interests.
It is calling for expressions of interest for commercial activities across a wide area of the airport and they don’t have to include aviation applications.
The move is part of the next phase in the development of the airport.
The expressions of interest include a business park, offices, leased space in both domestic and international terminals, general aviation and greenfield sites. They close on August 13.
Property and development manager Brett Rose said it was the first time the airport was offering property leases and tenancies on this scale.
He said it did not have to include businesses with aviation associations.
"We would consider each proposal on its own merit and do not have specific businesses in mind," Mr Rose said.
"Cairns Airport is open to accommodating non-aviation commercial activities and concepts within our precinct for
future growth."
There are 10 leases at the business park which covers 6.67ha with nearly 60 per cent of the park already leased by rental car companies, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service. The leases range from 1515sq m to 8565sq m.
"The airport business park offers potential tenants a high commercial profile with the option to design and build their own facilities," Mr Rose said.
Leases on offer include an 8788sq m ground support equipment area, 3000sq m of first floor open space in the international terminal and an 11,595sq m domestic terminal project office.
Mr Rose said the airport was "an entrepreneurial and pro-active airport".
"We are committed to long-term business relationships that foster sustainable growth and diversification within the highly competitive aviation environment," he said.
"Our location provides a strategic and operational advantage as tropical North Queensland’s gateway to global trade and commerce in the Asia Pacific region."
