Shape up on Cairns Esplanade

Monday, July 26, 2010

IT is one of the city's biggest tourist drawcards, but the Esplanade is shaping up as one of its biggest gyms as well. Do you exercise on the Esplanade?

Cairns Regional Council is preparing to build a new fitness station, which it says will be a more modern version of the popular outdoor mini-gym opposite the Aquarius Apartments.

The station will provide cost-free workout options and will include equipment tailored for the elderly and people with back injuries.

It will feature a "flex wheel", two cycle trainers, a fluid walking device and two cross trainers.

Simone Roseler, from the council’s Inner City Facilities department, said the station opposite Aquarius had proven particularly popular since a recent upgrade, but the new station would be so much more advanced the two could not be compared.

Small rock-climbing facilities are also planned for near the Esplanade skate park.
