Fashions battle at the races
THERE may be the excitement of the punt, the roar of the crowd, the thrill of a win and the heady smell of horses, sweat, grass and beer...
But it's the fashion that will be the main drawcard for the beautiful people when racing season begins.
1940s Hollywood glamour and 80s drama will be top influences for fashionistas attending the Cairns Cup Carnival (August 7-8).
Louise Struber, long-time race goer, and winner of two race-fashion awards, said this season would see lady-like silhouettes, pencil skirts, tailored jackets and rich shades of purple and berry.
There will also be "bold silhouettes and clashing colours," she said.
Racing royalty Amanda Macor hinted at how to make an impression trackside.
"Mix it up, play with colour combinations or add colour to a simple black and white ensemble," she said.
Amateurs ambassador Lucy Biggs predicted eclectic bold colours, bling and military and vintage styles.
"I think Cairns people are creative and fashion savvy and I’m looking forward to seeing the fashions on the field," she said.
Racing season is also very much about parties – the hottest tickets will be for the Cairns Cup’s Fashionistas cocktail party on July 30 at Lilo Bar and the Unbridled Party for Cairns Amateurs Young Members at the Salthouse on September 4.
