Cairns Cup races a feast of fashion
IT is becoming increasingly hard to figure out if it is the fashion or the fillies that are bringing the crowds to Cairns race meets.
Keeping the punter’s eyes on the track has been tougher than ever at this weekend’s Cairns Cup with Fashions on the Field co-ordinator Amanda Macor saying our Far Northern frocks just keep getting better.
"Cairns is doing this better and better on a monthly basis and now the ladies are dressing up for the Cup and the Amateurs and recycling those outfits at the other race meets," she said.
"This weekend the ladies have really embraced the autumn fashions.
"The felt hats were a stand out and there was lots of black and grey."
Though the ladies pulled out some amazing outfits on Saturday, Ms Macor said yesterday’s fashions seemed even harder to judge.
Among the winners were Evelyn Romeo’s coral and grey ensemble and a red and black outfit with heart shaped topper worn by Rachel Smith.
Committee member Gary Riches said the inclusion of Fashions on the Field had transformed the Cup into "a proper day out" rather than just a race meet.
"Just looking over the balcony today it became obvious that it’s a real family day," he said.
"Everyone was so happy – there was no trouble.
"We’re getting lots of support from the locals and Queensland Racing so it just seems to get bigger and bigger every year."
