A NEW emerging designers competition at the Cairns Amateurs is attracting students from as far away as Brisbane and Melbourne.

Forty-five fledgling designers have registered for the new Fashions on the Field category that will see the top designer receive $3500 in prizemoney and $1500 for the best emerging milliner.

Tropical North Queensland TAFE teacher Carla Richardson said 16 students were designing, making patterns and sewing their outfits, including hats and fascinators, for the Amateurs carnival from September 3 to 4.

"They're really looking good. They're very creative and they're using beautiful silks and colours," she said.

"We're really excited about the emerging designers category."

Amateurs chief executive officer Graham Thornton said students from Brisbane and Melbourne were coming to the carnival to compete as emerging designers in the competition for under-18s.

More than 700 people have signed up as Amateurs members, ensuring them access to the reserved membership areas and bars serving full0strength alcohol.

Full membership costs $540, young membership $300 and race membership $290.
