Truck's wheels torn off in El Arish crash

A POWERLINE contractor is in Townsville Hospital after a crash between his four-wheel-drive and two semi-trailers on the Bruce Highway south of Innisfail yesterday.

The Toyota Landcruiser was travelling north near Digger Creek, north of El Arish, about 9.30am when it veered onto the wrong side of the road and into the path of a southbound B-double truck.

Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the 38-year-old driver of the Landcruiser, who was trapped in the wreckage for about one hour.

He was stabilised at the scene by paramedics, before being flown to Townsville Hospital in the Emergency Management Queensland helicopter.

"He's got head injuries and internal injuries, he was semi-conscious but was responsive," said Innisfail Sgt Greg Batt.

"At this stage we’re hopeful the gentleman will recover."

The truck driver of the B-double escaped unhurt after the impact ripped the wheels from beneath his truck.

It slid for 100m along the Bruce Highway before colliding side-on with a northbound refrigerated transporter and coming to rest in a culvert.

Heavy damage: The collision tore away the front wheels of the B-double truck.
