Walsh crowned king of Wings
A BIG crowd saw the sprintcars turn on the style on a thrilling night of racing at Cairns Motor Speedway.
The Motoco Sprintcar King of Wings drivers stole the show on Saturday night with Lawrence Quagliata from Ayr leading the 30-lap race up to lap 23 only to run out of fuel.
This allowed Brisbane driver Paul Morris through, only to retire a few laps later when he got a flat rear tyre.
This left the way open for local star Mike Walsh to keep the opposition at bay and power home to victory.
Brent Aprile, 18, from Mackay was second and Brisbane driver Gary Finglas came third.
Justin Freeman wrote off his car after making contact with the concrete wall on turn two, leaving him battered and bruised.
In the formula 500 class it was a fight to the line in the feature race to hold back Mackay driver Robbie Muscat, who finished second to local driver Glen Underwood.
In the Modified Productions Sedans, Max Bennetts and Johnno Collins raced door to door for the feature race with Bennetts claming victory.
Peter Stretton took out the Super Four Cly class feature race in his Ford Laser.
He drove a hard and clean race to out-drive newly-crowned Queensland champion Darryn Collins in his Nissan Silvia.
Tamara Bailey, driving a Ford Laser, got ahead of Luke Rayment to claim the feature race win in the Junior Four Cly class.
