Cairns event washed out

ATTENTION has turned to the next event in Cairns' festival of tennis after the FNQ Open was washed out yesterday.

But eyes will still be on the sky today, with forecasts predicting showers and rain to continue.

The rain prevented any play yesterday, with quarter-finals, semis and the grand final of the Open still to be played.

But the going gets harder in the Australian Money Tour platinum event from today, with the field stepping up a notch heading into the Cairns International, starting at the weekend.

Top seed in the men’s singles, Kaden Hensel, has a world ranking of 436, almost 400 places higher than the top seed of the FNQ Open.

Ranked No. 16 in Australia, Hensel heads a strong list of young talent that includes New South Welshman Dane Propoggia, 20, ranked No. 23 in Australia, Victorian Adam Hubble, ranked 32 in the country and junior Wimbledon runner-up Ben Mitchell.

Women’s top seed Alison Bai, a former junior Fed Cup player, is ranked No. 18 in Australia and has a bye into the second round of the tournament where she will meet either Karis Ryan or Bernadette Massih.

Second seed Isabella Holland heads into the tournament in good form, having made the semi-finals of the recent AMT event at Kawana – where Sophie Letcher, the No. 3 seed for this week’s tournament, made the final.

Play is scheduled to start at 7.30am today depending on the weather.
