WHAT do you get when you give a sports journalist trained in jazz and classical music a guitar, a notepad and a chair on a tropical beach?
Nikki Jensen is not sure either but however you label the music she creates, one thing is for certain – it is award-winning stuff.
The talented 24-year-old, who goes by the name Nikki J, was crowned the queen of country when she won the Cairns Road to Tamworth competition on Sunday.
Her prize is to perform at the Sydney V8 supercars event, attend a two-day music bootcamp and may see her make a trip to Nashville in the US.
"When I first moved up to Cairns 10 months ago I found that I had the time and space to pick up music again now that I wasn’t studying," she said.
"I was living in this amazing place in Clifton Beach and I would just sit on this old chair and I found that it was a really inspiring spot to write music."
Within months she started to perform around Cairns.
