Far Northern climber set for icy reception
CHILLING out in some of Cairns' coolest locations may become a regular pastime for mountain climber Craig Roberts.
Mr Roberts was hamming it up at Cousins Ice Manufacturers yesterday in preparation for the sub-70C temperatures he will endure in November next year, when he and climbing partner Jay Finucane set out to conquer Antarctica's highest peak, Mt Vinson.
A chance meeting with polar explorer Robert Swan inspired the two men to set out on their mission to raise awareness of climate change and the need to protect Antarctica's environment.
And this week, Mr Swan will help the pair with their fundraising efforts when he speaks at the Reef Hotel Casino on Thursday night.
Mr Roberts said hearing Mr Swan talk about his 25-year affiliation with the Arctic was an experience in itself.
"It's kind of a nurturing feeling," he said.
"It's what he does, it's empowering.
"The whole thing is about inspiring the next generation."
Encouraging the next generation to help protect the Arctic is what Mr Roberts and Mr Finucane's mission, dubbed "Keep It Cool", is all about as well.
The pair hope their bid to climb Mt Vinson will build on Mr Swan's "2041" movement to maintain the environmental protection of Antarctica when the Antarctic Treaty is re-evaluated in 2041.
Mr Swan was the first person to walk unsupported to the North and South poles.
