Reggae festival set to rock the Far North
JUST when you thought the festival fun was over, along comes another event to keep the September entertainment bandwagon rolling on.
While Cairns Festival wrapped up a successful 17-day program on Sunday, a festival of a different kind will hit town this weekend.
The Reggaetown World Music Festival is a locally-produced annual reggae, roots and world music showcase with a huge line-up of acts scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Tjapukai Aboriginal Culture Park at Smithfield.
Supported by national youth radio broadcaster Triple J, organiser Mickie Selton says despite the name, the event is about much more than reggae music and the two-day event would have something for everyone.
"I'm very excited to be presenting the first world music festival in Cairns this year," she says.
"Reggaetown has exploded into a cultural, island and roots music extravaganza.
"We've got a full two-hour John Butler Trio set, as well as The Cat Empire, Katchafire, Tiki Taane, Blue King Brown and lots more."
The music is complemented by a huge selection of market stalls, food and drink outlets and the special Cairns premiere of the film Our Generation.
