Daft Punk - Tron Legacy Soundtrack Review

As if the mind-bending 3D visuals weren't enough, Disney's sequel to its classic sci-fi flick Tron features some pretty fine music as well.

French electro upstarts Daft Punk were charged with putting together the soundtrack for the futuristic action film and even score a cameo (in trademark space helmets) in the movie.

Instead of just reappropriating old tracks, Daft Punk have written every second of the Tron: Legacy from scratch and make no mistake, this is a soundtrack, not just a surrogate artist album. Using a full orchestra and the duo’s years of experience in the studio, the Tron: Legacy soundtrack is nothing short of amazing, quite possibly one of the best in film history.

Daft Punk’s French electro is still very much present, but it’s wrapped in a slicker, more sensible styling.

The best achievement of the album is its ability to sit in both camps.

Those who are there for the film alone will certainly be impressed with its futuristic electronic soundscapes and core Daft Punk fans will still find plenty in it to get happy about as well.

Two tracks in particular walk the edge of this dichotomy.

End Of Line shows influences from the original masters Kraftwerk, while Derezzed is pure Daft Punk in all of their spiralling glory.

Rectifier has all the brooding energy of the Imperial Death March from Star Wars, while Nocturne provides one of the most serene moments of the album.

I can see these tracks getting a serious workout when the inevitable remixes arrive, not to mention the bootlegs (which have begun hitting the internet already).

It’s a testament to good filmmaking for Disney to have such experienced producers on board for Tron: Legacy.

Unlike most movie soundtracks, this is one that will keep you coming back for many years to come.

>> Review by Jesse Kuch. The Tron: Legacy soundtrack is available at good record stores now. Tron: Legacy 3D is on show at Birch Carroll and Coyle Cairns Cinemas now.

Cameo: French electro kings Daft Punk look right at home in Tron: Legacy.
