Why stop at one night at Foxy's Bar when there's so much to do on Fitzroy Island, writes Julianna Kerr.

If your nightlife in Cairns needs a little shaking up, it’s time to escape to paradise for something a little different.

Foxy’s Bar is the happening new night spot at Fitzroy Island Resort. There’s local beer behind the bar, pool tables, a dance floor and a great stage for live bands.

You’ll be able to kick back, enjoy some fantastic music and dance the night away on this beautiful tropical island.

But why stop there? Fitzroy Island is an ideal getaway and just so close to town, so you might as well make a weekend of it (the things we have to do).

Your adventure begins with a 45-minute boat trip from Cairns to the island. Once you’ve arrived, it’s time to drop off your gear and whet your whistle with a cocktail or two (try the Fitzroy Island Iced Tea) and chill out by the pool, which features a great swim-up bar.

Spend your day swimming, snorkelling or just relaxing. For those who can tear themselves away from the resort, get back to nature with one of the four walking tracks. The Lighthouse Road is a steep 3.6km return track that leads you past a viewing area where, on a clear day, you can see Green Island. For those who are truly game, you can continue on to the Summit Track, which of course leads you to the top of the island.

These are fairly tough walks but worth every minute (and the pool will be waiting when you get back).

After a day of relaxing followed by evening celebrations at Foxy’s, head back to your choice of lovely rooms (our favourite was the Ocean Suite, which comes complete with a full kitchen and fabulous balcony).

The resort features a games room, a mini supermarket and even an in-house movie theatre, so there really is something for everyone.

The next time you’re thinking about a great little break not too far from home, Fitzroy Island is definitely the place.
