Life after death

With the legendary Clint Eastwood in his 80th year (81 in May), it's not a huge stretch to understand why he is approaching subject matter like the afterlife.

His latest film, Hereafter, is an unusual supernatural thriller that examines this very concept through three separate but intrinsically linked stories that unite into a rich tapestry that shows off Eastwood’s true mastery of filmmaking.

It doesn’t quite soar to the great heights of Invictus, Changeling or Gran Torino, but it’s clear from the film’s pacing and tone it’s not trying to either. Instead it favours a deeper, more measured approach with a gentle spirit not present in many of Eastwood’s more recent films.

Hereafter’s 129 minute running time gives leads Matt Damon, Cecile De France and young actor George McLaren plenty of space to move with their characters and, indeed, it is their performances that give the film its real impact.

There are times where the plot does feel a little bogged down in its ethereal subject matter, but in the end, the film’s loudly beating heart and raw emotion win the day.
