Big wet washes out Bulls opener
THE FNQ Bulls will have to wait another week for their first match of the Queensland State League season following the postponement of tomorrow night's encounter against the Gold Coast at Mareeba due to wet weather.
Football Queensland made the call yesterday after a week of heavy rain left the Borzi Park pitch waterlogged.
With little prospect of the field drying out over the next two days, Football Queensland decided to reschedule the game for the weekend of June 11-12.
The postponement is a blow to the Bulls, who expected a big crowd to turn out to watch the home team and a Gold Coast side featuring former Socceroos defender Craig Moore.
But Bulls operations manager Alex Srhoj said player safety had to take priority.
“We had a kid break his leg last Sunday in the Mazda Cup and conditions were nowhere near as bad as they are now,” he said.
“It’s disappointing. There was a lot of anticipation building and it was shaping as a big weekend with Craig Moore coming up.
“It’s the first time in two years we’ve succumbed to the weather.’’
The Bulls will head to Cairns Esplanade tomorrow night for a rigorous fitness session.
