Mareeba powers up for offroad racing
IF you are not afraid to get your 4WD muddy or dirty, an all-terrain event may be the adventure you have been waiting for.
A first-time competition will be held at Mareeba in June as adventure enthusiasts take part in the ARB FNQ Off-road Challenge.
Hosted by a not-for-profit organisation, Ruff Konduct 4x4 Inc, the three-day event on June 11-13 will take place on Chewko Rd with non-stop off-road action.
There will be two vehicle categories – Modified and Weekend Warrior.
Participants in the event will drive their factory-equipped and modified vehicles on a series of tracks on various terrain.
“The Weekend Warrior is designed for those that use their car as their daily driver, but is slightly modified,” club president Kylie Dixon said. “This class allows any amount of lift, a maximum of 35” tyres and one locker.”
Dixon said the Modified class was for vehicles with more modifications, and are encouraged to have window nets and roll cages.” The competition is the only one of its kind in Far North Queensland, with the closest event in Mackay.
“This competition is an exciting prospect for the 4WD community of the Tableland, Cairns and surrounding suburbs,” she said.
“We have had a lot of interest in the event by local businesses and the local community.”
If this adventure sounds like you, organisers are urging participants to nominate now before entries close on today.
“The club is willing to extend this date to allow more vehicles to compete,” she said. “There will also be a team event where those competing will work together to get through a track.”
The community is welcome on June 11-13 to watch the action of the ARB FNQ Off-road Challenge. Entry per day is $10 per person; camping is $10 per car per night. Visit www.ruffkonduct4x4.com for more information.
