Cairns' alleyway artists are running out of space
THE vibrant local street art community has been doing their bit to revitalise the tired and ageing CBD but are running out of space.
They have put the call out to local businesses for more legal walls to paint.
Very different to unsanctioned vandalism, street art has become a colourful part of the local streetscape with legal graffiti walls popping up in all parts of the city.
Kick-started by Taste-y and Caffiend’s 75m wall on Grafton St, which has been voted by readers of The Cairns Post as winner of the timeOUT Award for Best Art Exhibition two years in a row, legal spaces can now be found at the Cairns Civic Theatre, Telstra Building on Shields St and at the Club One Gym on Sheridan St, among others.
Taste-y owner Josie Zulaikha says more businesses are recognising the benefits of donating a wall to artists.
“We approached Club One Gym a while back to provide a legal wall, as the artists have outgrown the alleyway near Taste-y,” she said.
“It’s now an ongoing project that is being repainted every week with new artwork.
“The owners are really happy and have asked for us to paint the other side as well. The original building had awful tags (vandalism) on it.”
