Ultimate disc catching on in the Far North
A SPORT synonymous with the college grounds of a US university campus is taking Cairns by storm.
Ultimate disc is fast picking up in the Far North with a local group starting a weekly mixed competition on Tuesday and an introductory session every Sunday afternoon.
While competitive, the sport does not require referees.
“It’s all about the spirit of the game and although we take it seriously, we’re all here to have fun,” Cairns player Corey Edwards said.
“It’s growing hugely in Australia and other countries are slowly realising that we are a team to be reckoned with.”
He said they were always after new players of high-school age and above.
>> Cairns Ultimate Disc runs a beginners timeslot every Sunday 4.30pm-6pm and competition Tuesday 5.30-7pm at Munro Martin Park. For more information, see their Facebook page (Cairns Ultimate Disc) or email cairns@quda.org.au.
Why it’s catchy
● Originated in the US at university
● A cross between American football, AFL and netball; teams throw a frisbee between themselves taking marks up the field and score a point when they catch it in the opposition’s end zone
● Non-contact but extremely athletic and skilful
● A points-based system where the winner is first to 15
● The only competitive sport that is self-refereed
● Hugely popular in Germany
● Australian team is called the Dingos
● Can backhand (traditional), forehand (fast and flat) or hammer throw (overhead) the disc
