In preparation for timeOUT Day In the Park, The Cairns Post is offering the chance for local musicians to shine in our annual live music and DJ competitions

The biggest and best live music festival in Cairns is not far away with timeOUT Day In The Park set to touch down for its sixth year at Fogarty Park on the Esplanade on Saturday, August 13.

Full details of line-up and tickets will be announced in the coming weeks but before we launch all that, we’re putting the call out to all local bands and DJs to get registered for our popular timeOUT Battle Of The Bands and Battle Of The DJs competitions.

Held in the lead-up to the main event, the timeOUT Battle Of The Bands and Battle Of The DJs gives local talent the chance to earn a spot on the main stage on August 13 alongside our star-studded Australian line-up, as well as the prestige of being named Cairns’ top local live acts.

Winning the Battle Of The Bands in particular has become a badge of honour for local musicians with past winners using the gig as a springboard to national fame and success, including 2008 winners The Medics, who have become darlings of the Australian live music scene, and 2007 winners Sleeping In Trains, who featured Mark Myers, now a member of The Middle East.

The Battle Of The Bands will be comprised of two heats, on Sunday, July 3 and Sunday, July 10, followed by the Grand Final on Saturday, July 30.

The Battle Of The DJs forgoes the heats and simply requires you to submit a demo set on disk with the successful applicants battling it out on Saturday, July 30, straight after the Battle Of The Bands.

Both the Battle Of The Bands and Battle Of The DJs are all about showcasing the finest in local talent, so if you’re itching for your chance to shine on the big stage, get cracking!

1. Head to cairns.com.au/battleofthebands and download an application form.

2. Fill it out and return it to The Cairns Post by Friday, June 17 with either a CD demo or online profile to show us what you're made of.

3. Successful applicants will contacted and allocated a heat.

Battle Of The DJs

1. Head to cairns.com.au/battleofthebands and download an application form.

2. Fill it out and return it to The Cairns Post by Friday, June 17 with a CD demo or online link to show us your style and mixing ability.

3. Successful applicants will be notified and compete at the final on Saturday, July 30.
