Cairns Amateurs organisers predict a record turnout
ORGANISERS are tipping a record turnout at the revamped Cairns Amateurs racing carnival. Are you going to the races this weekend? Have you got your dress and hat sorted?
More than 5000 tickets have been sold for the Ladies Day on Friday, and more than 10,000 tickets for the Amateurs Cup Day on Saturday.
Last year’s carnival generated $8.5 million for the Cairns economy, including $3.5 million spent on fashion, hair and make-up, and more than 7200 room nights booked.

This year, the organising committee has engaged Cummings Economics to conduct research into the carnival, and the findings are tipped to exceed expectations.
"We expect to see an extraordinary turn out; it will be record breaking," Cairns Amateurs CEO Graham Thornton said.
"This year has seen the biggest changes the carnival has had in its 53-year history."
This year, the Amateurs Ball is being held at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal after traditionally being held at Tobruk Pool.
The Ladies Fashion Brunch has been transformed into The Ladies Fashion High Tea, to be held at Cannon Park.
The Amateurs carnival also boasts a new corporate area, the Cairns Amateurs Aviary, located in the centre field, featuring 12 floored and themed marquees.
