Cairns off-road racing team Geoff Olholm and Gordon Trigg won the inaugural Silver City 600 Cross Country Rally outside Broken Hill earlier this week in their Cairns Coconut Holiday Resort Mitsubishi Pajero.

Olholm used the event in preparation for the toughest off-road race of all, the 2012 Dakar Rally and this year is looking to better his fine performance of 29th outright in 2011.

Whincup-Lowndes race for V8 title

As the V8 Supercar Championship winds down for 2011, it is almost certain that 888 Commodore Team drivers Jamie Whincup or Craig Lowndes will win the championship. The former leads with Lowndes 100 points away in second.

Those in the pack fighting for a top 10 finish include Lee Holdsworth, Alex Davison, Jason Bright, Greg Murphy, Steve Johnson, Tim Slade and Fabian Coulthard.

In other V8 Supercar news, Walkinshaw Racing have confirmed that Touring Car and V8 Supercar journeyman Russell Ingall will be driving an HRT commodore in 2012. Though he hasn’t won a race since 2005, Ingall believes he can win once again. "I have always said I’m not in the sport to make up numbers. I enjoy racing hard and winning," he said.

Adams has sights set on walking

FormeR World Speedway Motorcycle GP Championship winner Leigh Adams, who suffered serious injuries when his motorcycle hit a tree in the Finke Desert Race in June, has checked out of the Hampstead Rehabilitation Facility in Adelaide, still wheelchair-bound. Though he has some feeling in his left leg, he has none in the right. However the 10-time Australian Speedway Champion is upbeat.

"They (the staff at the rehab centre) have taught me how to live in a wheelchair and I intend to keep working hard in physio, the swimming pool and on the parallel bars in an effort to keep improving physically," Adams said. "I’m setting up a gym at home and I’ll do whatever is required to eventually get out of this wheelchair and walk again."

Indy Car company honours WHeldon

Italian chassis manufacturer Dallara will honour the memory of Dan Wheldon by naming its new 2012 Indy Car the DW12. Wheldon helped the company develop the car before his death in a 14-car crash in Las Vegas in October. Dallara boss Gian Paolo Dallara said the car’s name was a tribute to Wheldon.

"As a homage to the work he did (on the car’s design), we’ve decided to dedicate the 2012 Indy Car Dallara to him and from today it will be called the DW12," Dallara said.

Ironically fairings over the rear wheels are a feature of the car to prevent following cars running up over the rear tyres and becoming airborne, which happened to Wheldon and Queensland’s Will Power at Las Vegas.
